Install and Configure Windows 2000 DNS Server
Part 1 - Installing the Windows 2000 DNS Server

Written by Tony Bhimani

Requirements
Microsoft Windows 2000 Server

This tutorial covers installing and configuring the DNS Server that comes with Windows 2000 Server. You will learn how to create a single zone on a Primary Name Server and configure a Secondary Name Server as a backup to provide fault tolerance. The information provided can also be used for Windows 2000 Advanced Server and shouldn't be much different for Windows Server 2003. The tutorial is broken into three parts to make it easier to follow. In part one we will install the DNS Server. Part two deals with creating a single zone on a Primary Name Server. And the final part shows you how to create a Secondary Name Server to act as a backup if the primary server fails for whatever reason.

To get started, locate your Windows 2000 Server disc. You will need it if you do not already have the DNS Server installed. You will also need a couple static IP addresses (only one if you do not plan to create a Secondary Name Server) for your servers. In the tutorial I use local LAN IP's, but you will be substituting them for your servers' Internet IP's.

Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel. Open Add/Remove Programs and click on the Add/Remove Windows Components on the left side of the dialog box. Scroll down to the item called Networking Services and highlight it. Once it has been highlighted, click on the Details button.

The Networking Services dialog box will appear. If Domain Name System (DNS) is not checked, put a checkmark on it and click OK. If it is already checked, then you can close out all the windows and skip to part 2 of this tutorial.

Click the Next button. Windows will bring up the installation progress dialog box and will come to the point of asking you for your Windows 2000 Server disc. Insert your disc and click the OK button. The DNS Server will be installed and several components will be configured.

Once the installation finishes you will be shown a success dialog. Click on the Finish button and close out Add/Remove Programs.

Our DNS Server is now installed. The next step is to configure it.
